The broad objectives of FIGA are as follows:
- Promote excellence in research and development with appropriate use of technology in earth sciences.
- Initiate and facilitate coordinated research by creating technical commissions and working groups in in contemporary areas of relevance in earth sciences.
- Promote interaction between individuals, bodies, institutions and industries interested in advancement in knowledge of earth sciences.
- Conduct national and international congress, symposia, conference and other meetings, tutorials, exhibitions etc.,
- Promote publication of research outcome in form of a journal, bulletins, newsletters, books and proceedings of its symposia, conferences and meetings.
- Coordinate and promote scientific activities related to earth sciences among national and regional societies and scientific community at large.
- Represent the field of earth sciences in relevant international forums.
- Cooperate with international and regional associations as well as governmental and intergovernmental bodies including UN organizations.
- Recognize and confer awards to honour meritorious achievements of individuals and groups.
- Promote and contribute education, training in the earth sciences
- Acquire properties such as office premises for use of society.
- Securing grants, funds, endowments and administering same for achieving objectives
- Appoint personal for smooth functioning of the society
- Promote all appropriate activities to achieve its mission
